Friday Fiction

Keeping Faith

Kimberly hurried down the street as fast as she could, knowing that she couldn’t afford to be late. Her chemistry lecture had over-run setting her back by 30mins. Her foster mum expected her to be home on time in order to run the bakery; she got to the bus stop and prayed that a bus would come along soon.

Alas, today was not her day, the bus came rambling along 10 mins later, and a passenger had an argument with the driver wasting 5 mins of precious time. Finally getting home at 16:20 she was met by her furious foster-mom.
“YOU’RE LATE!!!!!” screamed Mrs. Cobbler. She was red in the face and wearing her night-gown looking fatter than ever. Maxine Cobbler was an overweight and lazy woman who had the face of a bulldog. She grabbed Kimberley by the arm and forcefully dragged her into the hall way.

“You selfish selfish girl, you shall have no supper since you cannot be bothered to come home to do your work! You should have been at the bakery 20mins ago, so get your lazy backside there and WORK!! ”. Having said so she shoved Kimberly in the direction of the kitchen door. Maxine angrily walks away saying “And if you don’t make a profit you can FORGET about going to college tomorrow”

Kimberley picks her self up and heads up to the attic to drop her school bag and stuff, and then she rushes out the back door into the cold winter night. Grabbing her bike she pedals quickly, panting she locks her bike to a nearby fence then unlocks the shop door. Upon entering the shop she switches on the light and glances at the clock which reads 16:35, she changes the sign from closed to open. Donning an apron quickly she gets to work preparing sandwiches and hot drinks. Kimberley puts ready baked muffins in the oven in the hope of catching workers returning home.

Her first costumer of the day comes in at 17:00 and orders a cup of hot coffee with a sandwich, by 21:00 she changes the sign from open to closed after the last two costumers have left. Kimberley tidies up the shop pleased that she managed to make a profit. As she puts away the cleaning materials, suddenly the lights go out. “WHAT TH..........”
